If your yard or garden needs a makeover, start planning now. By doing the hard work in fall, you can jump right into your landscape project this spring. Consider these five things to prepare for your next landscaping project.

1. Figure out your goals

Look at your yard. What's working and what isn't? Since many homeowners feel overwhelmed when thinking about the whole yard, it might help to pick the front yard landscape this year, then work on the backyard landscaping next.

2. Get inspired

Browse garden magazines, websites, books, and more for inspiration. Bookmark several styles that appeal to you, so you have a starting place for a conversation with a designer.

3. Interview Designers

Once you know what you want to change and what inspires you, look for garden designers or landscape architects in the Lakes Region. Look for someone who has demonstrated experience in the project you want to do, such as building a pond, perched beach, patio, outdoor kitchen or creating a seasonal garden bed. Discuss ways to bring your project to life. Find out more about what to consider when hiring a landscape designer.

4. Budget

Once you select a designer, find out how much your dream ideas will cost you. If you don't have enough saved, you might want to apply for a home equity line of credit now, so you have financing in place by spring. Alternately, you can scale back designs to reduce the project cost or break apart the project into several smaller parts to be completed over time.

5. Obtain permits

Depending on your project, building permits might be required. Many communities require permits for hardscaping, such as stone patios, decks, or porches. Find a landscape designer who can help you obtain the permits needed so you're ready for the spring landscaping season. Find out more about shoreland permitting and restrictions.
